In the “Transfer Handling” project for Promotech, a fully automated special-purpose machine was developed to connect two independent injection molding machines (IMMs). The system includes a palletizer, multiple feed stations for inserting bushings, as well as a 6-axis and a SCARA robot. At the heart of the setup are the two injection molding machines: after the bushings are inserted, the first IMM — operated by the 6-axis robot — produces the so-called hard component, which is then temporarily stored in a cooling station. Finally, this hard component is overmolded with a seal in the second IMM.
For this project, AutoLab provided the complete PLC program, including the software interfaces to the injection molding machines and the robots, as well as a modern visualization and control interface for the system. The HMI was optimized to deliver a contemporary look and feel tailored to touchscreen operation. In addition, all data connections required for integration with the overarching production data acquisition system were implemented. Our software ensures that cycle times, downtime reasons, part counters, and much more are automatically transferred to Promotech’s IT systems.
Thanks to a streamlined and efficient process control system, the targeted cycle time was reduced by 17%, further increasing the overall cost-effectiveness of the system.
